NWFL Super 6 Macthday 1 Round Up: Edo Queens Goal Harvest, Heartland Stalemate Debut, Rivers United Brave Fightback

Producing a total of five goals in the first half, one would have thought that the second half game between Confluence Queens and Edo Queens would be less energetic but there was more to come in the second half as Moses Aduku ran riot, taking a four-goal lead into halftime as the NWFL Super 6 competition gets underway in Bayelsa, Yenogoa at the Samson Siasia Stadium.

Emem Essien opened the scoring for Edo Queens in the 13th but that celebration didn’t last long when Merit Offor latched on a loose ball in the 21st minute to restore parity for Edo Queens.

Osigwe Goodness then brilliantly connected to captain Abideen Suliyat’s pass to restore her team lead, there were quick goals afterwards which showed great team work and understanding when Moses Chioma bagged the third goal in to make it 1-3, Emem Essien then got her brace in the 39th minute after beating Confluence Queens Ruth Ogana from close game.

The result puts Edo Queens top of the standing with goal difference.
A beautiful volley by Goodness Osigwe came after a mix up just outside the box and she volleyed home a cracker to complete her hatricck and give Edo Queens a four-goal cushion.

Following resumption of play, both teams pressed on for more goals with Edo Queens enjoying most of the possession albeit, it ended 1-5 in favor of Moses Aduku’s ladies.

Game 2: Nasarawa Amazons FC vs Heartland Queens FC
Obi Okpala’s side undoubtedly had a very good regular season hence earning a deserved Super 6 berth, making their debut as they look to slug it out with top sides for a continental berth.

Nasarawa Amazons did got their moment in the first half after a pull down in the box but midfield ace Chinyere Kalu’s strike who took on the penalty responsibility was stopped by Chukwu Uchenna.

Lucky Mary threatened on the flanks all through the game and was a handful for Christopher Danjuma’s side.

Nasarawa Amazons will be so thankful to Unachukwu Udoka for her strings of saves to keep Obi Okpala’s side at bay, she was substituted late into the first half after injuring herself while stopping a terrific strike.

It ended goalless between both sides heading into matchday 2.

Game e 3: Rivers Angels Vs Bayelsa Queens

Arguably the biggest clash of the NWFL Super 6 matchday 1, Rivers Angels held down their own against Bayelsa Queens who were buoyed by a roaring home crowd at the Samson Siasia stadium to go into half time goalless after strings of wasted chances from the hosts.

Rivers Angels had their breakthrough moment from the penalty spot, Fehintola Mabokanje prevailed the battle of wills to send Ademola Morufa the wrong way much to the applause of the excited home crowd.

Game went on with both sides more cautious but a defining moment came for Rivers Angels in the dying minutes of regular time following some mix up in defence, Rita Peter was at the right place to guide the ball one with a lovely strike to nick a point for her side heading into matchday 2.
