NWFL Championship Matchday 1 Roundup: Imo, Mahi Win Big In Thrilling Opener

With 19 participating teams and just 2 slots available for promotion, the 2024/25 NWFL Championship which has gotten underway is living up to expectations after some big margin results in the opener in Calabar at both respective match venues.

The royal rumble began with Imo Strikers making light work of debutants Heroes Queens, smashing seven goals past them at the U.J Eusene Stadium, Calabar.

Flamingos star Chidi Harmony continued her goalscoring exploits by grabbing a first half hatrick and adding another in the second half to take her tally to four goals, placing herself firmly top of the golden boot race.

Her attacking partner Precious Oscar did get a brace in the encounter.

Second game at the same venue saw First Mahi Babes play out a thrilling 4-2 encounter with Castmog Ladies with the later ending up as winner despite fight of a comeback from the Ogun State Ladies.

Honey Badgers against Dreamstar Ladies was definitely the highlight of matchday one as the clash did produced some nerve cracking actions much to the excitement of fans. You just couldn’t catch your breath during that tie.

Kwara Ladies who slugged it out with Fortress Ladies in the last game at the U.J Esuene Stadium played out the first barren draw of the match day one encounter.

At the St Patrick College venue, the first game saw Ibom Angels pick a routine win against Papa Soccer with a 3-0 scoreline.

The Ibom Angels landladies who relegated in 2022 made a statement of intent of returning to the NWFL Premiership topflight with the deserved victory.

Unification FC grabbed a nervy 2-1 win against Delta Babes FC as Osun Babes dismantled Moje Queens to get their immediate NWFL return ambition up and running.

Wazbak Int’l FC slumped to a narrow 1-2 loss to Gallant Queens in the final match of the day at the St Patrick College match center.

A total of of seven wins in eight games was recorded, one draw, 32 goals scored across both centers) in game 1 goalfest opener.
