Nigeria could not match the expertise of their perennial rivals Egypt in the men’s weightlifting category of the ongoing African Games in Ghana.
The team could have won six medals overall but none of those was a gold return in what seemed like a disappointing outing going by their standards.
Akano Desmond led the Nigerian lighters with two silver medals and a bronze to his name.
Other medals were won by three other lifters in different categories.
Speaking with our correspondent was president of the Weightlifting Federation Ibrahim Abdul who conceded Egypt have always been a banana peel to their ambitions.
“The athletes did their very best and put up a good fight.” He started.
“Egypt have always been our most dreaded competitors and we did our best but it didn’t happen to be our day.” He said.
The president gave an insight into the coming Olympic Games qualifiers in Thailand later this month where the team would be competing for a place at the event proper in Paris.
“Our game is a very peculiar one as you have to participate five different qualifying events of which four have gone with the last one coming up in Thailand and we promise to do our best as always.” Concluded the administrator.
