African Games: Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Anyanacho Clinches Gold, Amusan Blistering 100m Start As Nigeria Continue To Build On Medal Hunt

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has built on his shot put feat once more after claiming gold today at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana with a 21.06 finish.

The African Games champion, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi recently set a new indoor African record in shot put and also beat the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifying mark after landing a massive 21.63m at the Hvězdy V Nehvizdech meeting in Czech Republic back in February.

He broke the 13-year-old African indoor record of 21.47m, which was set by Janus Roberts of South Africa in 2001 in the Olympics qualifier event.

Tobi Amusan, two times African defending champion got off to a blistering start at the day two athletics event in the ongoing African Games in Accra, heat two of the women’s 100 m hurdles as she leads the chart to conveniently defend her crown. 

Amoanimma Rose Yeboah who won Ghana’s first gold medal at the 2019 African Games has won gold in the women’s high jump final with a personal best height of 1.89m, unable to beat South Africa’s Hestrie Cloete who boasts a 1.96m feat.

South Africa’s Pretorious Fredriech won gold in men’s decathlon (6888), Edwin Kipmutai (6476) took silver, setting a national record in his home country Kenya and Algerian Dhiae Cherif Boudoumi (6195) won bronze.Nigeria’s Usheoritse Itsekiri, running 10.23 seconds, narrowly missed the gold in the men’s 100m final after being outpaced by Cameroon’s Emmanuel Alobwede Eseme, who seized the top spot with an impressive time of 10.14 seconds.

Itsekiri, who previously won bronze in Rabat 2019, now claims the silver medal. Meanwhile, Hainuca Gilbert from Namibia secured the bronze with a time of 10.29 seconds. Eseme Emmanuel Alobwede from Cameroon won gold with a 10.14 finish.

2019 Silver medalist, Gina Mariam Bittaye from Gambia clinched gold in the women’s 100m with a time of 11.36 seconds, Alyse McCoy from Liberia secured silver with 11.49 seconds, and Nigeria’s Olayinka Olajide took bronze with 11.55 seconds.

Elizabeth Anyanacho has also won gold for Nigeria in Taekwondo having defeated Africa’s No 1 ranked Egyptian Mohammed Aya in 3 rounds of fight on the mat to emerge winner.
