There were lots of memorable, record setting moments in the opening fixtures of the 2023/24 NWSL season, significant events that will undoubtedly go down in the history books.
Angel City FC yesterday’s season opener against recently expanded Bay FC still continues to gather momentum especially among the Nigerian folks who have their poster girl Asisat Oshoala on the scoresheet, grabbing Bay’s first ever goal.
CPKC Stadium, the first custom-built professional women’s soccer stadium in history, opened its doors to spectators in Kansas City, Missouri. Watchers were in for a shock when the game included nine goals from seven different goal scorers, if they thought that would be the most thrilling element of the opening weekend of the season. Oshoala made history in Bay Area sports history in front of 22,000 spectators in sunny Los Angeles in the 17th minute when she scored her team’s first goal ever. It turned out that her goal was the only one of the game, but ACFC didn’t give up easily.
Nine of the 19 shots that Angel City FC attempted were on goal, requiring saves from Bay FC goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx and goal line clearances from Bay FC defenders.
The Bay FC debut game was attended by 22,000 people, making it ACFC’s third sold-out season opening game at the BMO Stadium.
This season’s three Californian teams competing in the NWSL are Bay FC, Angel City, and San Diego Wave FC. For the first time ever, three separate teams from the same state will compete in the same season in the history of WUSA, WPS, or NWSL.
Castellanos, King, Oshoala, and Proulx made their NWSL debuts. Notably, in their first-ever NWSL regular season, Proulx tied Adrianna Franch’s record for most goalie saves when she made her NWSL debut for the Western New York Flash back in 2013.
She also made league history as the 16th goalie to record a shutout in their debut.
Notably, the Thompson sisters became the first sisters to appear for the same NWSL team.
